1.“SIMPLIFIED SECRETS OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) FOR BEGINNERS’’
One Day Hands on Workshop on
Basics of Geographic Information System (GIS) Applications for Public Health Practitioners
February and March 2018
ICMR - National Institute for Research in Environmental Health (ICMR – NIREH), Bhopal organized three sessions of ‘’One day hands on workshop on Basics of Geographic Information System (GIS) applications for Public Health Practitioners’’ on 13th and 20th February and 17th March 2018. Faculties, residents and researchers (41) from medical colleges in Bhopal and other places within the country registered for the workshop. Dr Yogesh Sabde, Scientist-E (Epidemiology), demonstrated the participants the independent usage GIS applications in Public Health research using of hands on exercises and case studies.
The contents of the workshop were divided in four broader sections viz; 1) GIS data: Where different types and sources of GIS data were explained. 2) GIS software: Different proprietary and open access GIS software were introduced. As an example set up of QGIS version 2.18.16 was installed in the personal laptops of the participants. Participants were also provided with sample data for hands on practice on GIS tools during the subsequent sections. 3) Hands on practice: The third section included hands on practice of some important procedures in GIS using the installed version of QGIS and sample data. For this five different tasks (small projects) were given to the participants to facilitate learning by doing procedures like, creating layers of feature classes in GIS, coordinate capture, managing layer properties, managing attribute tables, using print composer, geo processing and geo statistical applications. All the participants successfully completed all the tasks through an active interaction with the coordinator as well as with other participants 4) Case studies: Lastly real life experiments GIS applications shared through presentation of different scientific studies with GIS tools that are published by the course coordinator (Dr. Yogesh Sabde) so far. The studies included GIS applications in infectious diseases, health system research, maternal and child health, emergency transport and critical care access. This was followed by question answer session, rapporteur’s report and valedictory function.
2.‘Workshop-cum-Seminar on Scientific Writing and Publication’ ‘Workshop-cum-Seminar on Scientific Writing and Publication’ organized by ICMR-NIREH, Bhopal during 4-6 July 2018 A 3-day ‘Workshop-cum-Seminar on Scientific Writing and Publication’ was organized by ICMR-National Institute for Research in Environmental Health (ICMR-NIREH), Bhopal during 4-6 July 2018. It was attended by 26 participants affiliated to premier institutes and universities across the country. The workshop-cum-seminar comprised lectures, assignments and comprehensive hands-on session on various aspects of manuscript writing and publication, grant proposal writing, and presentation at scientific forums. The Guest speakers were Dr. N.C. Jain, Scientist-G and Head, Division of HRD, ICMR, New Delhi; Dr. Prashant Mathur, Director, ICMR-NCDIR, Bengaluru; and Dr. Sanghamitra Pati, Director, ICMR-RMRC, Bhubaneswar. Several scientists of ICMR-NIREH acted as resource persons for the workshop. Dr. R.R. Tiwari, Director, ICMR-NIREH, in his welcome address, gave an overview of the workshop and urged the participants to take this opportunity to learn writing compelling research articles and grant proposals. Dr. Mathur, in his lecture on the first day of the workshop, explained the need for effective scientific communication. In her talk, Dr. Pati emphasised the importance of theoretical framework in writing research articles and explained the IMRAD format. Dr. N.C. Jain, in his lecture, described the emerging trends in biomedical communication and gave some suggestions to the participants on identifying a suitable peer-reviewed journal for publication of their manuscripts. The other sessions dealt with each section of the manuscript viz. Abstract, Introduction/Background, Methodology, Results, and Discussion at length as well as the important aspects of the publication process such as Peer Review and Ethics in Scientific Publishing. Two hands-on sessions were conducted in which the participants were asked to frame an abstract of a manuscript – main text of which was provided to them, and develop a concept proposal on a research theme of their choice.
3.ICMR-National Institute for Research in Environmental Health (ICMR-NIREH) Bhopal: A Report on 3-Days National Workshop on Flow Cytometry, 27-29 June, 2018The 3-Days National Workshop on Flow Cytometry, 27-29 June, 2018 was organized by the Department of Molecular Biology, ICMR-National Institute for Research in Environmental Health (ICMR-NIREH) Bhopal during June 27-29, 2018.
